Vitreous Enameling (Minakari) is the art of fire, earth, and furnace, painted in brilliant and metallic colors dating back to 1500 BC. Isfahan is the cradle of this art in Iran. ََVitreous Enameling (Minakari) is one of the most beautiful and spectacular handicrafts that has been around for five thousand years.

Vitreous Enameling on Copper

Today, this art is mostly done on copper, but it can also be done on gold and silver. For enameling on copper, the object they want to enamel must first be shaped by an expert coppersmith. Once it is made, Master Mina Kar gives it a white glaze. It is usually glazed three to four times, and each time the object goes into the oven and sees a temperature of about 700 degrees to fix the color of the glaze. Then it is painted with different colors. The object goes back to the oven and sees a temperature of about 400 to 500 degrees to get the colors as desired.

Sassanid plates discovered in Armenia, some of which are kept in the Museum of Islamic Art in Berlin (Germany) and some in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (USA).
